Banned But True By PeanutsChoice | Citizen of Europe – Thursday Satire Series | June 18, 2025
If democracy were a TV show, this week’s episode would be written by Kafka and directed by Elon Musk.
Welcome to the news cycle where irony isn’t a tool — it’s the whole script.
1. Hungary Declares ‘Freedom From Press Day’
“Too much media freedom can be destabilizing,” said Orbán’s Culture Minister — apparently without irony.
On June 14th, Hungary launched a new national holiday celebrating not freedom of the press… but freedom from it. State media ran documentaries warning of “fake neutrality.” Independent journalists were, naturally, not invited.
Fact check:
This is part of Hungary’s new “Cultural Sovereignty Initiative,” which only funds “pro-nation” media — defined, of course, by the Ministry of Moral Clarity. Think: nationalism by subsidy.
2. Giorgia Meloni to Publish ‘Family Values’ Guide — Co-Written by a Twice-Divorced Crypto Guru
Chapter One: How to Raise a Traditional Family While Laundering Bitcoin from Dubai.
Italy’s PM is launching a guide to “European family values.” Her co-author? A tech influencer under investigation for money laundering who advocates “traditional wives” while announcing his fourth engagement.
Fact check:
This ties into Meloni’s ongoing alignment with far-right influencers — many of whom are also selling crypto scams under the label of “economic sovereignty.” She claims to know nothing about the allegations. That may, ironically, be true.
3. Trump Touts ‘Freedom Phones’ Made in China, With Russian Firmware
“It’s the most American phone ever built by people we can’t legally name.”
Donald Trump Jr. unveiled the Trump T1: a “patriot phone” designed for conservative voters. But the hardware is a 2023 ZTE knockoff, and experts have confirmed the firmware includes code from Russian telecom surveillance modules.
Fact check:
Cybersecurity analysts found device identifiers linked to Russian infrastructure. The phone is now sold on “FreedomMarket.biz,” alongside MAGA bath bombs and discounted ivermectin.
4. Dutch Far-Right Leader Suggests ‘Selective Democracy’ for Immigrants
“They can vote… just not on everything.”
Geert Wilders recently proposed a “tiered democracy” where citizenship rights are weighted based on heritage. Asked to clarify, he added: “We just want to stop people from voting against their own integration.”
Fact check:
The comments were made during a televised panel on “Dutch Identity and National Unity.” No satire required — it aired live, with applause.
5. AI Candidate Elected in Bavaria — Still More Popular Than Real Politicians
“She’s not corrupt — she’s just in beta.”
A small German town elected “Anna,” an AI chatbot, to its municipal council. She ran on a platform of free transit, neutral governance, and no small talk. Locals said she felt “more honest” than any human candidate.
Fact check:
Anna is based on an open-source civic AI prototype. She gives legally compliant answers 80% of the time — which, in Germany, makes her a moderate.
Reality Check
These aren’t jokes. They’re real headlines.
They’re how authoritarianism hides behind absurdity.
And they’re killing democracy — not with a coup, but with a laugh track.
Why This Joke Is Killing Democracy
Authoritarians now rely on reality being too ridiculous to believe.
When the truth sounds like parody, citizens disengage.
That’s not satire. That’s the strategy.

Disclaimer
“Banned But True” is a verified satire column by Citizen of Europe.
All events described are factual and verifiable at the time of publication, though presented with dry humor and parody-style framing. Where speculation or fictionalization occurs, it is clearly marked.
This column exists to expose anti-democratic trends through verified truth that sounds too ridiculous to be real — and that’s exactly the problem.
