A Politically Charged Attack Shocks Minnesota
Who:
57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, a former security consultant and appointee to Governor Tim Walz’s Workforce Development Board, has been arrested and taken into federal custody following a politically motivated shooting spree that left two people dead and two others hospitalized. Boelter also operated a private security company and had past involvement in evangelical missionary work.
What Happened:
In the early hours of Saturday, June 14:
At approximately 2:00 a.m., Boelter shot State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette in their Champlin home. Both survived after undergoing emergency surgery.
By 3:30 a.m., Boelter—disguised as a police officer—entered the home of State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark in Brooklyn Park. Both were killed in what authorities now confirm was a targeted political assassination.
After exchanging gunfire with responding officers, Boelter fled the scene. A massive, multi-agency manhunt followed. He was ultimately apprehended Sunday near the Minnesota–Canada border.
Why:
A manifesto recovered from Boelter’s vehicle included a hit list of over 70 public figures, including Governor Walz, Senator Amy Klobuchar, Representative Ilhan Omar, and leaders of reproductive health clinics. Authorities say his writings were laced with far-right ideology and anti-abortion rhetoric, confirming the shootings were ideologically driven.
Boelter Now in Custody
Boelter was captured late Sunday evening after an 18-hour search involving federal, state, and local agencies. He was found on foot in a wooded area outside Baudette, Minnesota, near the Canadian border. Authorities report he was still armed but surrendered without further violence.
He is now in federal custody and expected to face multiple charges including:
First-degree murder
Attempted murder
Impersonating law enforcement
Terrorism-related offenses
Federal prosecutors are reviewing whether to add domestic terrorism enhancements under Title 18 of the U.S. Code.
Victim Profiles
Melissa Hortman (1969–2025): A longtime Democratic-Farmer-Labor lawmaker and former Speaker of the Minnesota House. Known for her leadership on reproductive rights, climate, and civil liberties.
Mark Hortman: Husband of Melissa. Both were killed in their home.
Senator John Hoffman: A sitting senator since 2012, Hoffman survived multiple gunshot wounds. He and his wife Yvette remain hospitalized but are stable.
Political Fallout and Response
Governor Tim Walz called the shootings “an act of political terror” and warned of rising extremist threats targeting local elected officials.
Senator Amy Klobuchar, who was named in the manifesto, issued a joint statement with Representative Ilhan Omar urging Congress to treat domestic terrorism with the same gravity as foreign threats.
President Biden has been briefed, and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is expected to visit Minnesota this week.
Public Safety Implications
Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant despite Boelter’s arrest. Lawmakers have been advised to review security protocols, particularly in smaller jurisdictions where impersonation of police remains a concern.
The FBI confirmed Boelter possessed legitimate-looking tactical gear, law enforcement-style decals, and digital copies of Minnesota officer credentials.
What Happens Next?
Lawmaker protection remains in place, especially for those listed in Boelter’s manifesto.
A special legislative session is expected to be called this week to address gaps in elected-official security and crack down on the impersonation of law enforcement.
Federal investigators are combing through Boelter’s digital footprint, including encrypted messaging apps and forum logs, in search of broader conspiracies or extremist affiliations.
Public memorials for Melissa and Mark Hortman will be held in Brooklyn Park and at the State Capitol, with bipartisan attendance expected.
Boelter’s arraignment is expected within 48 hours, with state and federal prosecutors coordinating charges.
