When Parcels Become Politics
For decades, tariffs were about steel, cars, and trade balances. Today, they’re about sweaters, second-hand books, and handmade jewelry.
This week, postal services in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Italy suspended package shipments to the United States, citing new import duties and unclear customs charges introduced by Washington. Carriers say they cannot reliably calculate what a parcel will owe at the border, so shipments risk being delayed, returned, or written off at a loss. France and Austria are reported to be preparing similar pauses.
From Trade Wars to Wardrobe Wars
This isn’t Airbus vs Boeing. It’s ordinary citizens who suddenly can’t send a care package, fulfill an Etsy order, or receive spare parts from across the Atlantic.
- Small EU sellers lose affordable access to U.S. customers.
- American buyers lose low-cost access to niche European goods.
- Postal systems can’t guarantee outcomes when parcels hit customs.
Tariffs have become a household problem.
Everyday Globalization, Disrupted
Globalization was never just about container ships. It was also the €30 shipment from Copenhagen to Chicago, the indie label in Berlin mailing vinyl to Boston, or a family in Rome sending gifts to New York. By extending tariff uncertainty to postal goods, Washington has turned global e-commerce into collateral damage.
Who Benefits?
- Courier giants can fill the gap quickly, but at a steep price point that kills impulse, low-value cross-border trade.
- Subsidized exporters (notably from China) may capture more U.S. market share, as their logistics channels are already optimized and cost-buffered.
Why It Matters for Europe
- Political cost: Europeans now feel tariffs directly, not abstractly.
- Economic cost: Micro-exporters risk losing the U.S. as a viable market.
- Strategic cost: Every suspended parcel deepens distrust across the Atlantic.
The symbolism: when a student in Berlin can’t ship books to New York without triple-checking tariff codes, trade isn’t just about trade anymore. It’s about trust — and right now, that trust is breaking down, box by box.
