“How can I bring a child into this world?”
That’s no longer a rhetorical question — it’s an everyday dilemma for many young Europeans in 2025.
The fear isn’t just economic. It’s existential. It’s about climate, conflict, democracy, and whether tomorrow looks safe enough to raise a family in.
A Generation Living Between Crisis and Collapse
Millennials and Gen Z in Europe now face pressures that go beyond what their parents ever imagined.
- Housing: Average rents in cities like Dublin, Amsterdam, and Berlin have doubled in a decade. In Ireland, monthly rents now exceed €2,100.

[Source: Eurostat April 2025] - Politics: Far-right governments are gaining ground from Italy to the Netherlands. They promise “security” — but often target rights instead.

War Is Now a Daily Reality — Even Without Boots on the Ground
For many young people, the world feels like it’s spiraling into permanent crisis.
- Ukraine: Russia’s invasion enters its fourth year. Despite EU military support, the war remains deadlocked. Missile strikes in Kharkiv and Odesa continue to kill civilians.
[Source: Reuters, June 2025] - Israel–Iran Conflict: After Israel’s June 13 strike on Iranian nuclear and command sites, fears of full-scale regional war surged. Oil prices spiked, and European embassies in the Middle East raised threat levels.
[Source: BBC, CNN] - US–EU Tensions: Under Trump’s return to power, the US has pulled back from NATO coordination, imposed tariffs on EU goods, and criticized European “softness” on Russia and China.
[Source: Financial Times, The Guardian] - West Africa (Ghana region): Jihadist insurgencies have spilled into northern Ghana, destabilizing a region once seen as secure. EU missions have evacuated some personnel from Accra and Tamale.

These events don’t just dominate headlines — they dominate the psyche of a generation raised on the belief that peace was permanent.
“Do I Even Have a Future to Offer a Child?”
It’s not just inflation or rent. It’s the psychological toll of living in a world where basic rights and global peace feel negotiable.
“I can’t raise a child in a country that might not let me marry.”
— Daniel, 30, Hungary
“How do you explain the news to a child when you barely understand it yourself?”
— Lea, 26, Netherlands
“War, climate, authoritarianism — sometimes I feel selfish even wanting a family.”
— Sofia, 27, Spain
Across Europe, mental health studies show record levels of anxiety and disillusionment among under-35s.

Authoritarians Use Crisis to Tighten Control
As war and economic instability mount, far-right governments seize opportunity — not to reassure, but to control.
- Hungary requires women seeking abortion to undergo “fetal heartbeat” tests.
- Italy is reviewing funding for IVF for LGBTQ+ couples.
- Poland attempted to ban emergency contraception in early 2025.
- Disinformation campaigns spread online blaming migrants, feminists, and LGBTQ+ people for societal decline.

These policies don’t “defend the family.” They limit who gets to have one.
But The Future Isn’t Lost — It’s Under Construction
Fear is their tool. Solidarity is yours.
✅ Defend reproductive rights
✅ Demand affordable housing and job protections
✅ Resist fear-based politics
✅ Support leaders who prioritize peace and democracy
✅ Fight disinformation with facts, not fury
Building a future worth living in — and raising children in — starts with defending it now.
The Bottom Line
You’re not selfish for being afraid.
You’re aware.
But that fear doesn’t have to stop you. It can move you.
The next generation of Europeans doesn’t need to inherit war and repression. It can demand rights, safety, and possibility — and build a world children can thrive in.
